From Rust to Must Have

Hi everyone – I hope you had a wonderful weekend. The weather this weekend was beautiful and I love the feel of fall in the air (my favorite season). Since the weather was so nice I worked outside on some projects that needed sanding and painting. I was able to finish one project since I had so many going at one time that I will share with you today and the others are in the garage waiting for this weekend.

A little while back I found this picture on Pinterest and knew I had to have something similar for my bathroom. When I went to the flea market a couple months ago I found this poor rusty shelf that just needed some TLC.

This weekend I sanded all the peeling paint and rust then added two coats of brown spray paint turning it from rust to my must have for the bathroom.

CKC Project – Book Photo Frame

A few weeks ago I shared my trip to the Creating Keepsake Convention with you and today I want to share one of the projects I completed in class. The class was taught and sponsored by Tickle Me Pink Designs.

Now I will admit this was the last class of the day and when I found out what we would be making in this class I thought to myself “really this is not what I was expecting”. So we were first asked to select a book – I selected a book I liked based on shape thinking it would be covered but there I sat with a royal blue book when nothing in my house is blue so luckily a nice lady in class traded books with me and I ended up with this beautiful orange book that actually matches the walls in my living room.

After getting our books we then went to a table filled with all types of embellishments – flowers, tulle, pins, ribbon, and more flowers. The object was to select items you could build on to design the corner of the book to frame a photo.

Then it was time to start building and gluing. It was a small class so the teacher came to each of us to give us some inspiration and even shared that most people walk into the class thinking this was not what they signed up for but walked out loving what they created. Needless to say I was one of those people it turned out really cute and I received several compliments on the finished project. When I got home I added a picture my hubs and I had taken a few years ago and look how cute it is on my bookshelf.

Weekend Fun - Finds from The Barn Sale

 

Wow! I’m really behind in my post this week but I wanted to share some of my finds from The Strawberry Patch Barn Sale this weekend. You can find more information about The Barn Sale here and here. They have a sale in the Spring and Fall – I think I will be going back!

What is a Barn Sale without a great barn – the crisp air and the smell of hay reminded me that Fall is almost here!

I purchased this wonderful frame for $8 – I’m still trying to decide what I want to do with this so any suggestions?

 

I also purchased this cute shelf I’m going to distress (any thoughts about which room this is going in) I couldn’t pass it up since it does match my craft room. Sitting on the shelf is the metal tin, antique clothespins, and a fabulous metal “T”.

AAH! Look at this beautiful old spool – oh how I have great plans for this (once I get some other projects finished)! I also found this pattern from 1968 – I hear Mod Podge calling!

Craft Room – Button Flowers

Well it is almost Friday then it will be time for the weekend! In one of my previous craft room posts I mentioned I would share some of the projects I have completed for the sole purpose of decorating my room. Today I want to share with you an idea I grabbed from an issue of Creating Keepsakes.

To make the button flowers you will need two round styrofoam balls, tons of buttons, and straight pins. I used the decorative pearl tip pins to hold my buttons in place.

Once you have your supplies together start placing and layering buttons until the ball is completely covered except for a small section for your “stem”.

I then wrapped bamboo skewers with floral tape to make my stems. One end of the stem will go into your button flower while the other end will go into a piece of styrofoam in the pot to hold them in place. Tie a cute ribbon around the stem to make your leaves and it is as easy as that!

I did use dried moss in the top of the pot to cover the piece of styrofoam.

 

 

 

Here is another one I made by layering flowers and using brads, pins, and rhinestones to embellish.

Birdhouses & Crepe Paper Flowers with Flower Soft

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend! I was fortunate to have a 4 day weekend and accomplishment several projects that have been sitting around.

 

Today I want to share with you what I consider my last summer projects. I have been working on these birdhouses for my craft room for a couple of weeks so they were first on my to do list for the weekend and I used a technique I learned at CKC last weekend for the flowers.

I purchased these cute little wood flowers back at the beginning of summer at Michaels, so when I was ready to decorate I could not decide how I wanted to paint them, so instead I made flowers using crepe paper and the XXL glue dots.

After I made the flowers I sprayed them with one of my new loves – Luminarte Radiant Rain in Teal Zircon – to add color and a little sparkle!

For the center of the flower I used a fabric covered button with yellow fabric then covered it very generously with glue then applied yellow Flower Soft. I love the texture and the way these cute little flower turned out.

For the birdhouses I used the same colors from my outside projects – Martha Stewart Green Curry and Pool in addition to Wedding Cake.

1 – This birdhouse is distressed but it is hard to see in the picture – the roof and base have a bottom coat of Green Curry with a second coat of Pool while the main section has a base coat of Pool and a second coat of Green Curry with distressing to show the base color.

 

2 – I tried a new technique with this birdhouse by using the Martha Stewart Weather Crackle on the roof. I painted a base coat of Pool, covered that with a generous layer of the Crackle, and then covered with Wedding Cake. The remainder of the house is painted in Pool with Green Curry accents.

 

3 – This guy was a little tricky and you can probably see my paint uh oh’s. I painted the roof and base with Wedding Cake, trimmed with Green Curry, and painted the house with Pool.

 

4 – The little dome house is where I experimented using the Weather Crackle and as you can see it did not turn out very well so I decided to sand most of the Wedding Cake off to disguise the mess I had made.

 
Now they are finished and on one of my shelves.
